New market entry in electronics: iLo
The 'Lo' should give it away: if you can't get an iPod from Apple on time this year, perhaps you should check out what's available at a Wal-Mart near you. They have launched their own consumer electronics brand, iLo, and have a product line that is debuting in stores where they are most likely to sell.
First launched in May with a plasma TV selling for $1000 less than its competitors, the line now includes MP3 players (one of which is pictured at right) and DVD recorders.
While Wal-Mart pushes the prices down on existing technologies, other brands are creating new products. Samsung introduced the world's largest screen, nicknamed "Atlas:" a 102" plasma screen that you can hang on your wall. It will have to be a pretty big wall: the screen measures about 7' across and about 4' tall. They didn't reveal the price, but their 80" screen that came out several months ago sells for $45,000. This would put it in the iHi market segment.
